Water was clear and at a great level. The steady volume created new riffles and runs in the same old spots. This winter, mother nature has contributed new structure as she continues to guide the ever changing shape and features of the stream. Very encouraging for things to come this spring. As the sun broke through the clouds, fish were rising sporadically to black midges which could also be seen crawling across the snow. Although expected, tiny black stoneflies were not seen.
Specifics
and Tips:
Landed fish on midge patterns (#20-#24) on top including Griffith’s gnats and small black/olive body bugs. Nymphs (#18- #22) including pheasant tails, hare’s ear and zebra midges dropped off a slightly larger attractor pattern were also productive. A methodical approach is key - take your time an cover the water carefully.
